Artist Bio
This is Ella’s second year at Havergal College, and her first time taking a photography course. She is loving it all, and can’t wait to continue to explore with new media! Outside of school, she is a competitive dancer, and loves to exercise her artistic side! She considers herself to be pretty fun, so she decided to have some fun with the content of her photos! She would also like to thank her family for agreeing to be featured in these possibly embarrassing photos!
Artist Statement
To explore the theme of “Mom, Don’t Make me Wear the Goggles”, I have recreated old photos of myself and people who mattered to me when I was younger. It is clear that many aspects have changed between the photos--objects, faces, and backgrounds have been altered in the recreations to reflect what is important to me today. With this idea, I hope to communicate the idea that identity is fluid and shifts with time. While it’s true, some things always stay the same--you technically remain the same person, and so do the people around you--your personality, your appearance, and many of your interests change with the quick passage of time.
By exploring these concepts of time and intersecting identity, I hope people can relate to these photos. I hope these photos make them think deeper about how quickly time really does pass. Perhaps they will recall memories from when they were younger, and be reminded of the fact that they must live life in the moment, because it might just slip away before they know it! Because I am recreating photos from when I was younger, they naturally have some comical aspects...I hope my photos can bring a smile to people’s faces! My inspiration for these photos was, well, myself and my family! After looking through old photo albums, I realized how much we truly had changed in such a short amount of time, and thought it could be interesting to recreate them!
To conclude, by recreating old photos of myself and what mattered to me when I was younger, I hope people will take time to understand how the quick passage of time affects the way we change (and don’t change) along with it. In doing so, I hope it causes people to think about their past, present, and future.
